Workshop Title:
Sexual Rehabilitation: Integrating Intimacy into Holistic Recovery
Workshop Abstract:
Sexuality is a fundamental component of quality of life, often ranked by patients as equally important as mobility, independence, and pain control. Despite this, sexual health is frequently neglected in rehabilitation settings—due to discomfort, lack of training, or systemic stigma—even in specialized rehab departments. Clinicians may hesitate to raise the issue, especially early in the rehabilitation process, fearing it is “not the right time.” However, research and clinical experience show that early and sensitive integration of sexual rehabilitation improves patient outcomes, enhances body image and self-esteem, and fosters more realistic and empowered life planning.
This interactive 90-minute workshop is designed specifically for rehabilitation physicians and healthcare professionals. It is facilitated by an interdisciplinary team with expertise in physical medicine, sexual therapy, and psychosocial care. The session will include short lectures, clinical case discussions, and practical tools.
Workshop Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will:
Understand the medical, psychological, and social aspects of sexual health in people with disability.
Recognize common barriers—personal, cultural, and institutional—to discussing sexuality with patients.
Gain communication tools to raise the topic sensitively and effectively during rehabilitation.
Learn practical strategies and intervention models to address sexual dysfunction and intimacy concerns.
Feel more confident initiating and navigating conversations about sexual health within the rehab team.
This workshop aims not only to increase awareness but to provide participants with tangible skills that can be implemented immediately in clinical practice.
